Abstract

This paper introduces Floooat, a novel fabrication machine that creates floating 3D liquid artworks by stacking layers of liquids with varying densities. Unlike conventional 3D printers that fabricate solid objects using materials like PLA or ABS, Floooat explores the unique potential of liquid-based 3D fabrication. The system employs three stepper motors to manage liquid dispensing and four additional motors to control precise x- and y-axis movements for injecting liquid into the structure. A custom-developed software converts digital designs into stackable forms, facilitating a streamlined design process. By leveraging the principle of density-based separation, Floooat enables the creation of intricate, multi-layered objects that float within an 8 × 5 acrylic rod array. This work demonstrates several applications of liquid 3D fabrication, highlighting its potential to expand the perceptual and creative possibilities in the design space.
